The following slide sets were presented during a global tobacco summit during the 2011
Pediatric Academic Societies and Asian Society for Pediatrics Research joint meeting,
and are offered here to illustrate various international tobacco control initiatives.

Child Health and Tobacco in the Philippines
Benjamin P. Sablan, Jr., MD, FPPS, Professor at the University of the Philippines, Manila

Dr. Sablan presented tobacco control work being done through the Philippine Ambulatory
Pediatric Association, including training pediatric health care providers to address tobacco
use and secondhand smoke exposure in the practice setting.

Tobacco Control and Children- Asian and US Collaboration
Fumio Bessho, MD, PhD, Department of Pediatrics, Kyorin University School of Medicine

Dr. Bessho discussed initiatives to prevent youth smoking in Japan, including the country’s
 Japan Tobacco program.

Shohei Harada, MD, PhD, Chief of Division of Clinical Practice Policy, National Center for
Child Health and Development

Dr. Harada spoke about the work of Japan’s Joint Committee to Protect Children from
Tobacco Hazards, including a declaration of promotion of a smoke-free society for children.

Pediatric Tobacco Prevention in Shanghai
Fan Jiang, Shanghai Childrens Medical Center

Dr. Jiang outlined the severity of tobacco use in Shanghai, the associated impact on child
health, and ways to improve the situation, including a pediatric tobacco control school which
trains pediatricians on tobacco counseling.

Tobacco Policies and Protecting Children, Youth, and Families in the Western Pacific Region
Susan P. Mercado, World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region

Dr. Mercado discussed the WHO tobacco control initiatives in the Western Pacific Region,
 including the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the MPOWER strategy, and
country-specific advocacy and counter-marketing campaigns.
